Aviation and Safety

Welcome to the Aviation & Safety Department. We’re excited to have you as a student in one of our certificate or degree programs. What makes us different from other Universities with an aviation program are:

  • We have our own Cessna 172S aircraft equipped with state-of-the-art G-1000 glass cockpit. Students fly at more than 40% discount from the average rates at other flight schools.
  • We are located adjacent to the Opa-Locka Airport, giving our students easy access to their flight school.
  • Our faculty have many years of practical experience working in the industry.
  • Our Air Traffic Control program has its own tower that overlooks the airport and simulators that replicate how the FAA controls aircraft.
  • We offer thousands of dollars in scholarships for our aviation students.
  • We provide outstanding internship and mentorship opportunities for our students. We have partnerships with:
    • American Airlines
    • Miami International Airport
    • Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport
    • Spirit Airlines

Building on our legacy of leadership in South Florida, we are committed to providing students with a world-class University education which opens the door to greater economic mobility and professional advancement through innovative programs that provide greater access to the aviation community and subsequently, jobs.

We train individuals here to become pilots, to become air traffic controllers, and we also teach individuals to be managers in aviation.

So there are several things that really differentiate the Aviation Department from other universities.

We do own our own airplane, and we discount the rental of that airplane substantially for our students.

And it's a Cessna 172 equipped with an electronic really state of the art cool dashboard, which is called a Garmin g1 1000.

We're right next to Opa-Locka airport.

Our students, after they're finished with their ground school, they were five minutes away from getting in their airplane, so it's really convenient.

We do have our own tower, and we oversee Opa-Locka airport.

We also have simulators, so that our students get a lot of practice on controlling traffic that otherwise they wouldn't be able to do.

We do have a partnership with Miami International Airport, where students have opportunities for internships there, and they're rotated throughout different departments of the airport so they can get a little taste of each operational section of the airport.

We also have a an internship program with American Airlines, and we also have a mentorship program with American Airlines, so our pilot students get to be mentored by First Officers and captains that that fly for American Airlines.
