Center for Academic Resources and Support

The Center for Academic Resources and Support (CARS) is an Academic Success Center for Lions in their first year at FMU! CARS immerses new students in holistic academic support programming designed for their successful transition to higher education and toward their desired major and career ahead. CARS staff consist of academic wellness advisors and advocates, mathematics and writing interventionists, and a testing and ADA Accessibility Coordinator. These area experts are all committed to the retention and persistence of new and transferring students as part of a comprehensive First-Year Experience (FYE) program.

Specifically, CARS team members collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to foster student success in the following areas:

  • New Student Orientation
  • Placement testing (PERT) and initial college transcripts evaluation
  • First-Year seminars
  • Tutoring (Math & Writing)
  • ADA Accessibility Services (Accommodations and Academic Adjustments)
  • Summer Bridge programs
  • Academic advising for General Education core courses
  • Academic counseling for academically at-risk (early interventions and academic probation)
  • Fall Convocation

Here at the cars Center, which is a center for academic resources and support, we are here to help you from the point where you're admitted all the way through the onboarding process into your classes, and as you go through to graduation, students who come to cars.

Can expect a really warm environment.

You can also expect to grow as a learner and grow in self reliance, so as opposed to a warm environment where you feel like you're hugged all the time, that's great, but we also want you to get to your goals, and so there's some accountability there.

There's some learning measures that need to happen.

So to do that, we have a team of professionals who are academic advisors.

They work with our first year students.

And so our first year students are supported that whole way through transitioning to college, thinking about confirming, clarifying their major and their career ideas.

And we really support you into working with your major advisors, your faculty and then on through graduation.

We also include an ADA specialist who can help students with different learning needs.

We have an academic success coordinator who works with our first year experience and also any students who are struggling academically.

We have two really strong advisor advocates who work with those students in the first year with their advising, but also support them in ways of just navigating the college experience and all the things that you would need to do to make that adjustment to the college life.

We also have a skills lab and math coaches who are also here to help you.
